Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing such medications must be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team note that people who lose weight through dieting usually experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Accounts

Users who have stopped the jabs report a powerful return of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled one woman.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
