Larian Studios Announce a Fresh Divinity, Labeling it Their Biggest RPG to Date

The speculation about The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer that included memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This distinction implies that the team is likely crafting a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it kicked off the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, player agency, and complex character building—elements that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs only possible by choosing a distinct build with a unique decision path.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, enabling players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be completed in multiple ways, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can anticipate a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
