Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Significant Partnership Formed By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several leading political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
